Kentucky CASA Network (KCN) Partners with the Kentucky Bourbon Chase Relay Race for 4th Year to Raise Funds to Help Abused and Neglected Children in Kentucky
For the 4th consecutive year, The Kentucky CASA Network (KCN) is pleased to be one of the recognized charities of the Kentucky Bourbon Chase Ragnar Relay Race. “CASAs” or Court Appointed Special Advocates are Volunteers appointed by a judge to represent the best interests of abused and neglected children in court. The KCN's mission is to strengthen the local CASA programs that recruit and train these CASA volunteers. The Bourbon Chase is a 200-mile Relay Race that starts at Jim Beam and runs through the Kentucky Bourbon Trail finishing in downtown Lexington. The KCN has recruited 6 “charity teams” for this year’s race. 3 out of our 6 teams are from outside of the Commonwealth.
As part of CASA’s involvement with the race, Local CASA Programs provide Volunteers to work the race course throughout the 200-mile relay and are present throughout duration- from helping at the Jim Beam start to handing out medals at the finish line. This year, we have 55 Volunteers who are CASA Staff, CASA Volunteers and Board Members all working at various parts of the course.
Deb Filippone is a CASA Volunteer and the Team Captain of two Bourbon Chase Teams this year. Her team, “CASA’s Day Off” is affiliated with the Tri-County CASA Program in Leitchfield, Kentucky. This is the second year that Deb has run in the Bourbon Chase to raise funds for CASA. The team even has the support of their Family Court Judge, District Court Judge Shane Embry who is one of the Teams Van Drivers. “Running for CASA gives me the opportunity to do two of the things I love...run and help children. According to Filippone “As a CASA volunteer, I know how desperately our programs need funds to recruit and train more volunteers to advocate for more children. I would love to see us have the ability to serve every abused or neglected child in the court system, and running on a CASA charity team is a great way to help reach that goal.”
Starting with the 2014 Race, The Kentucky CASA Network has worked with 25 Charity Teams, several of which have chosen to run and raise funds more than once for CASA. As of the 2017 race which begins this Friday October 13th, these 25 Charity Teams have raised just over $185,000 collectively. These funds will go a long way to providing much needed support to the over 24,000 abused and neglected children in Kentucky in need of a CASA Volunteer.
